I'm Fr Joe Falkiner OP
Fr Joseph “Joe” Falkiner OP knows the region of Boksburg, Brakpan and Springs personally.
He grew up in Springs, had part of his schooling in Boksburg, and as a priest worked not only in the white town of Brakpan, but also in the poorer black townships of both Brakpan and Springs.
He also knows the world of gold-mining. Like his father, he also went to work on the mines. At the age of 28, he gave up that work “in order to work for God instead of for a mining company”.
He says: “I didn’t know what working for God might mean, so I joined the Dominicans to learn from them”.
He has been a Dominican now, working for God, for more than 50 years.
In this book, he combines all three experiences: that of living in the East Rand, that of working on the mines, and that of being a long-time member of the Dominican Order. It should be of interest to anyone from the East Rand, anyone connected with the mining world, and all Dominicans.
